“Repointing” is the process of removing old mortar from the joints and replacing it with fresh new mortar.
“Tuckpointing” is a process where the old mortar is removed from the joints and replaced with mortar that exactly matches the color of the bricks. Narrow rows of mortar ("fillets") in a contrasting color are then placed in the center of the new mortar joint. The terms "tuckpointing" and "repointing" are often used interchangeably; however, the final products are quite different aesthetically. Both processes involve removing old and damaged mortar and replacing it with fresh mortar; however, the repointing process does not include the additional step of placing contrast mortar lines at the joints.
